What follows is the complete institutional history this publication is willing to state. It is brief because it is limited to claims that could be checked, either in what the gallery itself published or in listings that were public at the time. An organization that lasted five decades accumulated a great deal more than this. Its exhibitions and its membership are all absent here by choice.
Founded in 1975
The founding year is 1975. The gallery was owned by its members, run by artists, and organized as a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Those four points are the whole of the founding record as it can be checked today. This archive states no more precise founding date than the year, and no account of who started it or why.
Port Washington, Then Sea Cliff
Huntington was not the first address. The gallery began at a location in Port Washington, New York, and later operated from Sea Cliff, New York, before the move that put it in Huntington. The archived record establishes that sequence and no more than the sequence. Nothing supports a claim about how long either period lasted or about what the gallery did during them, so neither is stated.
A Second Organization: Northport Galleries
Northport Galleries was established in 1980 in Northport, NY, and relocated to Huntington, NY in 1987.
That was a separate organization with its own origin, and it appears in this record only because of what happened three years after it reached Huntington.
The Merger and the April 1990 Inaugural Show
The two combined. The merged gallery held its inaugural show in April 1990, and from that date the record treats them as a single organization.
The Huntington Address
The merged gallery's address was 299 Main Street, Huntington, NY 11743.
This is the only street address published anywhere on this site. It was a business address belonging to an organization rather than to any person. That organization no longer exists, and the address is part of its public record. No private address of any member, officer or entrant appears here or on any other page, and none ever will.
What This Page Leaves Out
Two subjects sit outside this page and have pages of their own. The gallery ran two recurring juried competitions, set out on the Paperworks and EXPO page. It closed permanently in 2025, which is covered on the page about its closing. Beyond those two subjects and the sequence above, this archive holds nothing further. Exhibition histories, membership lists and competition results are not reproduced, and their absence is a decision rather than an oversight.
One general point follows from a record like this for anyone who owns an object with an old gallery label attached to it. A gallery's own exhibition history can become part of an object's documented history, and that documentation is what how provenance changes a collectible's value examines.
