About The Spoke Review

This domain has two separate stories, and keeping them apart is the whole point of this page. One is a nonprofit art gallery that closed in 2025. The other is The Spoke Review, an independent editorial publication built afterward at the same web address, with no connection to the gallery's operations, membership or board. A visitor who remembers the old site deserves to know exactly where the line falls between the two, so this page draws it plainly rather than letting the domain's history speak for itself.

What This Publication Covers

The Spoke Review is an editorial and educational resource that covers paintings, prints and sculpture, antiques, coins and currency, jewelry and watches, plus the objects families uncover in estates and inherited collections. Articles are written to be legible to a first-time collector and useful to an experienced one: how a maker's mark works, what provenance actually documents, when a family should stop cleaning something and call a specialist. The Gallery That Was Here First

b.j. spoke gallery was founded in 1975 as a member-owned, artist-run cooperative and 501(c)3 nonprofit.

The gallery began at a Port Washington, NY location before later operating from Sea Cliff, NY, prior to its move to Huntington.

b.j. spoke gallery merged with Northport Galleries, with the merged gallery's inaugural show held in April 1990.

Following that merger, the combined organization operated from Huntington, New York for the rest of its history, and it is the gallery most people who remember this domain would recognize. The gallery ran two recurring national juried competitions, Paperworks and EXPO, with EXPO reaching at least its 44th edition. The gallery closed permanently in 2025 after roughly fifty years of operation as a cooperative.

Independence, Stated Plainly

The Spoke Review does not represent an active physical gallery. Nobody connected to that organization founded this publication or works on it, and it makes no claim to continue the gallery's programs, its membership or its exhibitions. What survives from that history is a small set of verified facts, sourced and kept in the Gallery Archiveapart from the collecting coverage that makes up the rest of this site. No individual who was part of that gallery is named anywhere on this site, whether a board member, an artist, or a competition entrant; the archive keeps to what can be verified about the organization itself, not the people who passed through it.
