This winner of the Grubacher bronze medal for painting, is in many ways an observer
of quiet moments. He paints possibilities, of light, of mood, and of color.
He has always been drawn to the works of the impressionists, focusing on their
handling of light. Edward Hopper's works have helped make him an observer of
mood and Wolf Kahn's canvases have shown him what color can do. By integrating
these observations with his own sense of composition, Irwin is able to create
paintings with a haunting quality which balances these elements.
It is his aim to leave the viewers with a feeling of reminiscence, a feeling
that at some time in their lives, they have come upon the scene he presents.
