When I had reached the ripe old age of ten, I already knew that I was going to become an artist. But it was not until after nearly half a century of different styles and media attempted and transcended, punctuated by frequent moves and worldwide travel, that I finally found my ideal subject. Here on Long Island is a landscape with all of the beauty, variation, and subtlety that a painter could ask for; both literally and creatively, coming here was coming home.
The constant challenges are never to take the light or the landscape for granted, and to create the illusion of space on the two dimensions of canvas and paper. While oil painting still receives some of my attention, my ideal material is pastel. The medium and I seem almost to manipulate each other, the pastels themselves suggesting directions to the hands that control them. And the destination is always the same: Long Island as it appears.
