METROPOLIS: A CITY LIVES
I have never gotten over the feeling of awe and excitement when, many
years ago, I moved to Manhattan from Boston. The height of the buildings
and the ever-changing skyline amazed me.
In my current work, I have tried to convey the feeling of rush and excitement
of an individual place, a city, a town or a street. I find that each place
has a unique vibration in terms of color and motion. I work rapidly to capture
this impression on paper and occaisionally on canvas.
Using Gouache, black ink and oil pastel on paper, I work and rework each piece
until I am satisfied that I have captured the mood of a particular site.
I find that layering the materials that I work with allows me the most
freedom of expression. This holds true whether I'm working on paper or with
acrylic on canvas.
